Baselworld Press Day 2008
Today was press day at Baselworld 2008 and most importantly, the opening of all watch halls. Here a few of my favorite watches so far, as well as a few shots of the show. Five more pics after the jump. Many more pics to come………. Oh by the way the fish tank image is part of the Breitling booth and the pic does not do it justice– the tank is suspended 2 stories in the air and looks unreal for a display that is temporary.

This site is full of watch aficionados and nice people. Special thank you to Tony for assisting me with my 5140 question. I apologize for having posted my question in the wrong section as I am very new to the site and still learning the site’s intricacies.

What drew you to Rolex and its watches?
Id like to hear some stories from fellow WIS’ on what drew you to Rolex. Was it just seeing it on someones wrist?, Seeing on the big screen through Bond or just something that made you want one!

After Rikki Rockett, the former drummer for glam metal band Poison, placed a Rolex watch Ebay recently, the Internet went wild with rumors that he was selling off his possessions because he is going broke. But if Rockett were going broke wouldn’t his old band mate Brett Michaels help bail him out of financial trouble? Rockett has gone beyond denying the rumors, flipping out on the press in an expletive-filled rant. “I decided to sell my 2006 Rolex because I haven’t worn it even once since I got the new one,” Rockett said. “Now I’m all over the c**p press with people saying like, ‘Oh, he must be broke!’ and bulls**t like that. Do I have to be on the skids (poor) to sell something? Do I have to keep everything I ever bought or in the public eye I’m going broke?”
Apparently, it is a touchy subject. After all, Rockett is a talented individual with real skills. A well-known vegan and animal rights activist with a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Renato Magno, Rockett was arguably the heart and soul of Poison. Additionly, in October 2008, Rockett married long time girlfriend Melanie Martel. Clearly, he does not want his wife to think that they are now in financial trouble. After all, Rockett was falsely accused of a crime last year. The press quickly crucified him, but failed to exonerate him with as much passion when it was discovered to be a false charge. Websites ran many headlines about his initial arrest, but few ran follow-up stories when the real perpetrator turned out to be a Rikki Rockett impersonator. No wonder Rikki Rockett is so angry with the press!
So what kind of Rolex watch did Rikki Rockett sell on eBay? He sold a 2T Datejust Turn-O-Graph with a champagne dial in 18k gold. The Datejust Turn-O-Graph is a member of Rolex’s Oyster Perpetual line. It is a Datejust watch, which is steeped in Rolex history, as Rolex introduced the first wristwatch to feature a date display on the dial of the watchin 1945. The date is displayed under a magnifying Cyclops lens and the Datejust Turn-O-Graph introduces a rotating bezel with sixty-minute markers. Other than the bezel, the Datejust Turn-O-Graph is distinguished from the other Datejust watches because of the red seconds hand marker and red date display. Unfortunately, the price that Rikki Rockett received for his Rolex Turn-O-Graph remains confidential.
Seen pictured Rikki Rockett is wearing a 2T Datejust with a black dial and a smooth bezel. At least, it appears to be a smooth bezel given the quality of the photo. Is this the new Rolex watch Rikki Rockett bought to replace the Turn-O-Graph or does he have a more extensive collection? If you you’d like to own something akin to the watch that Rockett didn’t sell, Melrose Jewelers has an excellent 2T Datejust with a black dial for a very affordable price. The Men’s 2T Rolex Datejust with Jubilee 18k/SS band is a dressier version of the Datejust, which allows for more versatility and a classic look. Most likely, Rikki Rockett liked the 2T Rolex Datejust so much that he no longer wore his Rolex Turn-O-Graph. As a result, he sold the watch on eBay, not because the hard rocker is broke, but because he had moved on to a different Rolex design.
